Landale powers Saint Marys past UAB

Center Jock Landale scored 20 points and 15th-ranked Saint Mary's shot well from long range to beat Alabama-Birmingham 76-63 on Sunday afternoon at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Stefan Gonzalez, Emmett Naar and Calvin Hermanson scored 12 points apiece for Saint Mary's (5-0), which made 13 of 26 3-point shots and shot 42 percent from the field overall. Saint Mary's also made all nine of its free throws.

Chris Cokley scored 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting for UAB (3-3), but the rest of the team was just 16 of 42 from the field. Dirk Williams, the Blazers' leading scorer coming into the game at 13.4 points per game, was 1 of 9 from the field and finished with four points, all in the second half.

The Gaels used a 10-0 run late in the first half to take a 17-point lead with 2:01 left before halftime, which ended with Saint Mary's holding a 43-27 edge.

Saint Mary's had 14 assists on 15 made field goals in the first half, when they made 9 of 17 three-point shots.

UAB got within seven points on Williams' two free throws with 14:33 remaining in the second half, but Gonzalez hit a 3-pointer to push the margin back to 10 and Saint Mary's controlled the rest of the game.
