Alabama Legislature combining primaries in March

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Legislature is trying to save nearly $4 million by combining the presidential primary and the state primary elections in March next year. The Senate voted 21-11 Thursday to give final passage to a bill that sets the primaries on the second Tuesday in March. They would remain on that date every four years when there is a presidential election. In 2008, the Legislature set Alabama's presidential primary on the first Tuesday in February to put Alabama early in the nomination process. The Legislature left the state primary in June. The bill's sponsor, Republican Steve Clouse, said new national party rules limit the number of presidential primaries in February.
