Google to 'come up with 'Terminator' style HUD glasses'

Birmingham Star (ANI) Wednesday 8th February, 2012

Google is reportedly ready with a pair of heads-up display glasses that would let wearers see the world in a way similar to the cyborg played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 'Terminator' movies.

It is believed that the specs provide real-time information from services such as Google Maps via an Android operation system, so that users can view information on the move.

The website 9to5Google claims to have seen a prototype of the Google goggles, which apparently resemble Oakley's Thump sunglasses, featuring a built-in audio system, the Telegraph reported.

The site said in December that Google was developing glasses using a heads-up display (HUD) that could tap into Google's cloud-based applications for information based on the user's surroundings.

It claims that the goggles have a tiny front-facing camera with a flash that can gather information and take photos. They will also run a navigation system operated by the user tilting their head to scroll and click.

The goggles will also have voice input and output, as well as the equivalent central processing unit, memory and storage of an Android smartphone.

The HUD would operate in just one eye to avoid disorientating wearers.

Despite the excitement surrounding their creation, it remains unclear whether the goggles will ever be produced commercially.

The project - understood to be in the hands of the company's Google X laboratory - is in keeping with its other radical ideas, which included a patent for a self-driving car last year. (ANI)
