Pirate Bay promoters to stand trial on lesser charges

Birmingham Star Wednesday 18th February, 2009

The founders of the Pirate Bay file-sharing site in Sweden have been relieved to hear that many charges against them have been dropped.

Pirate Bay was launched in 2003, establishing itself as the world's most top file-sharing website with 22 million users.

Swedish prosecutors have brought charges against the owners of the site, alleging Pirate Bay subscribers have been using the file-sharing facility to swap copyrighted films and music.

While prosecutors have now dropped the charges relating to assisting copyright infringement,

the defendants will still have to face lesser charges of assisting in the making available of copyright material.
